Supposedly “green” tea suffers from overpackaging

The fact that overly packaged goods are the norm these days is sad enough. But add a dash of redundancy and you’ve really got my goat. This one particularly bowled me over recently.

"Ineeka: Cultivating Consciousness" This description is heartwarming.

Ineeka‘s Treleela tea line boasts of its exceptional quality and commitment to sustainability. The 25 sachets come in a thick walled metal tin (energy intensive) and are designed for superior steeping (??). i.e. pouring water into a tea basket type contraption that hooks onto my mug and is somehow supposed to be tastier and easier for me to use. Um….last time I checked, it doesn’t get much easier than tossing a tea bag into my mug and then tossing it in the compost 1 minute later. As for flavour?…tasted like green tea to me. Thanks for the reinvention of a wheel folks. And for cultivating a headache.

How did this end up in my hands you may ask? I think it was a re-re-gift. Not surprised.

  1. So annoying…
Arayuma has lovely green teas, packaged yes, but packaged in boxes made from palm frawns that would otherwise be thrown away, and a plastic bag that can be reused. Tea sachets are made from corn based PLA and can be composted. Fair Trade, organic, and from worker co-ops in Sri Lanka. Perhaps a better alternative for the fancy-packaged tea drinkers to gift and not have regifted.
