Food Tip: Almonds

DID YOU KNOW… that the skins on raw almonds are hard for our bodies to digest? When eating raw almonds, try not to eat more than 10 at a time. Or, soak them for several hours/overnight and squeeze the skins right off!

  1. Cool. Any ideas on where to find raw non-pasteurized almonds?

  2. You raise a good point. Most almonds labeled “raw” are pasteurized, by either treatment with propylene oxide gas, at which point they’re no longer organic, or by steam treatment. This is the law, it seems, in the US (where most of our almonds come from). Some truly raw unpasteurized almonds can be ordered directly either from farmers or from overseas where you can sell unpasteurized almonds (e.g. Italy). My thought is that buying Organic raw almonds would guarantee no propylene oxide gas treatment, but they’d still be steam pasteurized. I’ll keep an eye out around Toronto for the real deal!
