11 Ways to Change the Food System in 2011

There has been a lot of resolve going on in my life this week. The new year has a way of doing that to us doesn’t it? While I would say that ANY time is a good time to foster change in your life, I thought I’d borrow a page from local food advocacy group, Food Forward, who just published “11 Ways to Change the Food System in 2011″. Here is my take on the Food Forward “Top 11″ list.

Building Community, one potluck at a time

I’ve been writing this blog for almost two years and I’m realizing now that I’ve barely written about the home in which I live! (Correction: Lived…for you on the ball folks who read my last post about how I have no fixed address at the moment). True, I don’t live there anymore, but it’s still [...]

A short update on Emily (and less about food)

It’s been just over a month since my last blog post! See? This is why I’ll never ‘make it’ in the blogging world. For someone who hates spending too much of her day staring at a glowing screen, I’m surprised I’ve kept it up this long! Here’s a bit of an update on me.

Do the Math Challenge: Day 4 – Drop-in Meals & Work-for-Foods

Time to get creative! With a shrinking allotment of food left, I’ve started to get a bit more creative around meal time. While I’m not sure if this was within permissible activities for the week, I decided that volunteering in exchange for food was acceptable. Kind of like a drop-in meal program, but a bit more dignified. I total, I’ve attended two community drop-in meal programs and volunteered at two other places that gave me food. Here’s a rundown of how they all went.

Do the Math Challenge: Day 3 – Swapping Diets with a Friend

Since this week I’m decidedly spending less than my usual $50/wk on food, I decided to swap diets with a friend who has been on and off of social assistance for years. Here, he writes about how he will spend the money.

Do the Math Challenge: Eating to Thrive

Today I am thinking about how food helps us thrive, and how my privilege is preventing me from fully putting myself in the shoes of those who depend social assistance. My conclusion? Poverty is like a big pit – it’s easy to fall into but really hard to get out of. So if you’re going to try and climb out of it, you better eat a damn good breakfast!

Do the Math Challenge Day 1

While the Food Bank Diet will be hard for everyone participating, I find myself facing a unique set of obstacles given my food allergies. My heart goes out to the thousands who, like me, have a sensitive stomach, but have no choice but to eat food that makes them sicker.

Do the Math Challenge

This week I am joining people across Ontario to rally for an increase to social assistance rates so that people can meet their basic food needs. To raise awareness of this important issue, I am eating a “food bank diet” for up to 1 week. This is my first post in the series.

Exploring Ingredients: Table Salt

DID YOU KNOW…that many brands of table salt list “sugar” as the second ingredient? Was this some kind of ploy to find new uses for the highly subsidized sugar industry? Or is there some reason for seemingly absurd move?

A Culture of Culture

You know what I think we need more of? Culture! Microbial culture that is (although I support the other kind too). I’ve been busy with my three new fermented house pets: sourdough starter, kombucha, & dirty socks porridge! Read on to feed your curiosity…

Food Tip: Almonds

DID YOU KNOW… that the skins on raw almonds are hard for our bodies to digest? When eating raw almonds, try not to eat more than 10 at a time. Or, soak them for several hours/overnight and squeeze the skins right off!

Saturday came bearing muffins & a foodie photoshoot

It’s been a long while since I’ve held a photo shoot in my kitchen. This probably means two things: 1) I have a kitchen again! 2) I have my Canon SLR camera again! (after 3 months of travel, I had neither of the two, and sorely missed them both. And thus is how my Saturday [...]

My new full time job: creative entrepeneur + scrupulous scavenger

I’ve been back for over a month now, and to date, have purposely not sought out a job. It seems to me, that the two socially acceptable forms of busying oneself around here are through one of two monetary transactions: 1 – being paid for your time in exchange for work or 2 – paying [...]

Surprise Sourdough Success

I can’t believe after royally messing with my recipe, I managed to produce a perfect loaf of vegan, gluten-free sourdough bread. Go figure. Here I attempt to recount my roundabout recipe in hopes that others may have similar successes.

Spend Less, Live More

My three month bike tour was an education in independence – both in venturing out on a voyage powered by my own two feet, but also in venturing away from dependence on the power structures that govern so much of our lives.
